135079 - Ahpr1000: Simplified, Intelligent and Environmental-Friendly Advanced Nuclear Power Plant
Abstract:
Nuclear power plays an essential part in the future low-carbon energy mix. However, the current Gen III+ nuclear power plants are generally not cost competitive with the increasing investment in safety design, and are required to be more environmental-friendly. The emerging technologies such as AI technologies are applied in nuclear power plant in a cautious and slow pace. In order to significantly improve the competitiveness and environmental friendliness of nuclear power, and gather the pace of convergence of AI technology and nuclear power technology, AHPR1000 is developed as an upgraded and innovative model on the basis of HPR1000 by the China National Nuclear Corporation, which aims to provide a mainstream clean energy solution around the year of 2030.
Inheriting the combined active and passive safety design philosophy of HPR1000, AHPR1000 develops three major passive safety systems to deal with design basic accidents by performing the function of safety injection, core residual heat removal and containment cooling, and therefore greatly simplifies the design of corresponding support systems. Meanwhile, a set of active system with minimal power supply and cooling chain is engaged to cope with the design extension conditions involving the failure of passive system. Single layer containment made of prestressed reinforced concrete with steel lining is adopted, which provides protection against commercial aircraft crash. The design satisfies the overall safety goal with the lowest cost, by seeking a balance between safety and economy. A compact nuclear island (NI) layout is achieved with an elaborate arrangement of items within NI buildings, reducing the volume of NI buildings to the maximum extent. Along with the massive modular design, the construction period can be significantly reduced.
AHPR1000 adopts advanced sensing technology with intelligent instruments and soft sensors, and applies network technology such as fieldbus to provide a highly automated control solution, which improves the ability to predict the plant status. Application of digital and intelligent technologies endow AHPR1000 with the characteristics of ubiquitous perception, centralized control, predictive maintenance, intelligent decision-making, and mobile service, reduction of operation and maintenance workload, to achieve the target of “unattended monitoring, less-attended on duty”.
Moreover, AHPR1000 is environmental-friendly nuclear power plant by minimizing environmental emissions and minimizing resource consumption without any adverse impact on people and the environment throughout the lifetime of construction, operation, maintenance.
Along with its outstanding safety, economy and advanced features, AHPR1000 provides excellent and practicable solutions for the domestic and international nuclear power market.

Presenting Author Biography: Yuxiang Wu received his PhD in Nuclear Science and Technology from Tsinghua University in 2010. He is a professor of engineering at China Nuclear Power Engineering Co., LTD., director of Innovation Center of Advanced Nuclear Energy Technology Research Institute, and technical leader in nuclear power field of CNNC. He mainly engage in the general design of nuclear power plant and development of advanced nuclear power models, including AHPR1000, HPR1000, ACP600 and others. He co-authored a publication in 2023, called “Advanced nuclear Power Plant Combining active and passive: Theory and Practice”. He is also on the editorial board of the journal “Nuclear Science and Engineering”.
