132055 - Analysis of Coordinated Development Between Smr and Papermaking Industry in China
Abstract:
The world's first onshore commercial SMR, the Linglong-1 ACP100 in China began construction in July 2021, and is now in the installation stage. The ACP100 SMR has the characteristics of high safety, modularity and multi-purpose. SMR can be used not only for power generation, but also providing steam for the industrial department. It contributes to the decarbonization of energy-intensive industries.
The papermaking industry in China is a typical energy-consuming industry, which mainly relies on traditional fossil energy for steam and power supply. The production process requires a large amount of low-temperature and low-pressure steam. China is a major producer and consumer of paper, as well as a major importer and exporter of paper. In 2021, China's paper and board production and consumption both exceeded 100 million tons . The production of paper consumes about 3,500 tons of standard coal per 10,000 tons, and the carbon emissions are serious. In the context of global warming, the industry is facing important issues in optimizing the energy structure and promoting green development.
The paper industry usually has its own small coal power plants and boiler houses to provide the steam and electricity required by the factory. SMR can be deployed to the user, which can effectively replace the papermaking factory’s own coal-fired power plant and coal-fired boiler. In terms of steam quality, the paper industry requires steam temperatures that are usually less than 250°C and require a lot of electricity. The ACP100 has a secondary loop steam outlet temperature of about 300°C, which can provide continuous and stable power and low-pressure steam. The steam quality parameters of the paper industry are consistent with those of the SMR, which can provide a solution for the decarbonization of the paper industry.
From the perspectives of technical characteristics, technology maturity, decarbonization demand, and coal-fired power plant substitution, the coordinated development of China's paper industry and ACP100 SMR is a typical case of nuclear energy helping industrial decarbonization.
In this paper, the parameter characteristics and capabilities of ACP100 SMR in the field of industrial steam supply were analyzed. The development status, distribution characteristics and steam parameters of China's papermaking industry are introduced. The coupling development opportunities between ACP100 and the paper industry were studied. The suggestions for the role of SMR in the decarbonization transformation of China's paper industry is given.
This paper takes China as a case study to introduce the development opportunities of coupling SMR and the industry. The important decarbonization role for nuclear energy in the fight against global climate change is provided. It provides important explorations for the coordinated development of human beings and the environment.
